Tom Donahue is a real estate expert and entrepreneur. He graduated from USC with a B.S., specializing in Real Estate Finance. He is the Founder and CEO of Alumni Alliances and is responsible for funding, strategy and capital markets. He is also the CEO of True North Companies LLC.
At the age of 30, Tom started a commercial real estate brokerage company called AzCal. The venture transformed into an international real estate private equity company called International Capital Partners where he raised capital worldwide for the acquisition and development of U.S. based real estate. During this period, Tom acquired and managed more than 10 Million Sq.ft. of property. Together with Deloitte & Touche (Edinburgh, Scotland), he formed the first investment platform that enabled on-shore capital in the United Kingdom to be invested in real estate in the United States.
Post his graduation, Tom started working for TOLD Real Estate Development Co., based in Ventura, California. He was also recruited as a member of Grubb & Ellis Real Estate Company’s elite office brokerage team.
During his college days, Tom was elected as the President of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity and played baseball for two years at USC. His love and loyalty towards his alma mater is the driving factor towards starting Alumni Alliances, a platform that will unite alumni and students of USC. Alumni Alliances is an exclusive alumni community that will benefit alumni and students of the University of Southern California in finding jobs, recruitment, raising funds and seeking donations, finding mentorship as well as mentees, organizing events, networking with fellow alumni, meeting business needs, etc.
Tom endeavors to bring alumni and students of USC on one platform to form a unique investment strategy equipped with a philanthropic approach to withstand today's complex economic climate. “It's all about how alumni and graduates can work and succeed together."
It has been my good fortune to develop and utilize my corp dev skills in several very different contexts, including on behalf of two very different insurance carriers. I have also led multiple projects outside of the insurance space, including in the consumer finance, furniture leasing, mutual fund and not for profit health care areas.
Throughout its history Assurant has shaped its specialty portfolio through acquisitions and divestitures. While there I led small start ups, turned around mature product areas, and negotiated various partnership arrangements. Created a training program which yielded in excess of 150 highly competent due diligence subject matter experts, and also formalized the integration planning process. I completed 22 acquisitions and 15 divestitures there. Our acquisitions were primarily bolt-ons but I also led several major acquisitions which moved Assurant into entirely new spaces such as group benefits and warranties.
More recently I have led American Family's forays into non-organic growth opportunities, Six weeks after my arrival we jumped into the company's first ever first due diligence. I have focused on improving our transaction skills through each opportunity evaluated--whether completed or not. In a brief time, we have utilized acquisitions and a merger to significantly broaden the geographic footprint and product portfolio and have supplemented our exclusive agent focus with two new distribution channels. We continue to pursue traditional insurance opportunities while also focusing on new data sources and enhanced analytics capabilities that allow us to identify new customers and develop greater insights into our existing customers.
I am continually fascinated by transformation of acquisition practice in the financial services space by the convergence of technology and innovation and strategy.
Barbara brings her expertise as a licensed Real Estate Broker and development consultant having assisted private businesses and public agencies to facilitate complex developments and infrastructure projects. Working frequently with state and local regulatory and permitting agencies, she has represented clients before a variety of administrative bodies to enable clients to complete very complicated projects such as the transfer of the Oakland Inner Harbor Tidal Canal from the US Army Corps of Engineers to the City of Alameda and the East Bay Regional Park District; local infrastructure permit coordination for the Veterans Administration project at the former Alameda Naval Air Station and currently working with the financing and entitlement for 925 acres in Arizona.
Barbara currently serves as the Vice Chair for BayEast Association of Realtors Alameda Chapter, Chair of the Alameda Firefighters Toy Drive Foundation. She resides in Alameda, CA with her husband and dog. She is a SF Bay Area native and has been involved with the local and regional community by serving in a variety of appointed and elected positions since 1984.
Connor Donahue joined NAI Shames Makovsky with ample experience in Denver’s commercial real estate market.
